Quality coffee starts at the source

In 1994, Rwanda experienced a terrible tragedy. And ever since the end of the genocide, the people of Rwanda have led the world in how to heal and grow.

Coffee continues to be a powerful economic and social source for good. We are excited to share a great coffee and even better story to help celebrate Rwanda's bright future.

“I am motivated by my passion in all things coffee. But I am sustained by the woman to the right and to the left of me”

- Agnes Mukamushinja

AGNES MUKAMUSHINJA
OF NOVA COFEE

Agnes is the big heart behind Nova's success. She is the anchor of their coffee quality and the source of care and support that radiates to all the people from Nova Coffee Washing Station.

Anges is one of the many angels sent down to heal Rwanda after that dreadful final machete came down in 1994!

What she has achieved since then is truly amazing and very inspirational.

Investing in Quality

COFFEE MILL AND WASHING STATION

Agnes is committed to quality. In her short time as an owner (since 2013) she has invested and re-shaped the washing station into an operation that now produces top quality specialty coffee.

She has completely upgraded the processing facilities, installing a new pulper, fermentation tanks and grading channels. Quality control management is advanced, with extensive sorting steps throughout the production process.

“Women are capable of doing anything."

- Agnes Mukamushinja

"Women often do not believe in themselves, and they lack self-confidence. That is why we at Nova are focused on producing coffee that can support people with work, opportunity, and community."

Women are critical to the Rwandan coffee industry across all levels; from working as coffee pickers, graders and sorters, to owning and managing coffee farms and washing stations.

Young girls without money are vulnerable, and can be taken advantage of. Nova wants to reduce their risk of sexual abuse, drug abuse and violence. Agnes wants them to be able to afford essentials so they can take care of themselves.

Agnes also helps married women with a second income so families can move forward and get ahead. Agnes knows that supporting women not only benefits the ladies, as “Once the ladies are well off, the whole nation is well off!”

Nova Washing Station Projects

FRESH WATER AND ELECTRICITY

Agnes wants to bring fresh mountain water to the washing station. This will also supply the local community near the washing station with a consistent supply of clean water. At the same time, she will also connect nearby houses to electricity. Proceeds and tips from this coffee will directly help Nova with projects like this.

Kwibuka | April the month of remembrance

REMEMBER 1994 AND THE MILLION PEOPLE LOST IN 100 DAYS.

April is annual commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. By remembering, we honor the memory of more than one million Rwandans who died in the hundred days of the Genocide. Every April we ask the world to come together to support the survivors of the genocide, and to ensure that such an atrocity can never happen again – in Rwanda or elsewhere.

Kwibuka is also a time to learn about Rwanda’s story of reconciliation and nation building.

DOING GOOD IS NOT A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Often times doing the right thing is used as a means instead of the ends. Copa Vida and Stori Coffee worked with Nova to bring the world the very finest coffee and even better stories.
